The difference between a dentist and a dental hygienist is that the dentist focuses on treating dental problems, while the dental hygienist focuses on preventing them, among other things by cleaning your teeth and providing oral health education and instructions. By visiting a dental hygienist regularly, you can help prevent dental problems, making extensive treatment by a dentist often unnecessary. Dentists and dental hygienists work closely together to help achieve and maintain your oral health.

The dental hygienist is dedicated to keeping your mouth healthy. During your visit, your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned by removing plaque and tartar. This reduces the risk of cavities and gum disease. In addition, the dental hygienist provides you with personal advice, brushing instructions, and other tips to help you maintain good oral health. The dental hygienist is also specialized in the treatment of gum problems.

We recommend visiting the dental hygienist at least once every six months for a preventive dental check-up and cleaning. Sometimes it is necessary to visit more frequently. This can vary from person to person and depends on your dental situation. For example, if you suffer from gum problems, it is advisable to visit more regularly. This enables the dental hygienist to closely monitor the health of the gums and to identify and treat any potential problems at an early stage.

The costs of a dental hygienist can vary depending on the type of treatment and its complexity and duration. Some treatments have a fixed fee. Examples include a fluoride treatment (codes M10/M20). Other treatments are charged per 5 minutes. The costs of these treatments are therefore variable and depend on the complexity of the case and the amount of time the treatment takes. This applies, for example, to preventive oral health instruction (code M01) and teeth cleaning/scaling (code M03).

Are you under 18 years old? If so, the costs of treatment by a dental hygienist are covered by the basic health insurance. For adults, supplementary health insurance is required to be eligible for reimbursement. We recommend contacting your health insurer to check whether you are entitled to reimbursement and how much of the costs will be covered. In most cases, part of the costs is reimbursed, up to a maximum amount per year. It is also good to know that the rates are set annually by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa), so you will pay the same amount for a treatment at any dental hygienist practice.
